How they match up:

Last season, the Jazz (1-2) won this series by winning in Salt Lake and splitting in Memphis.  This year however, the Grizzlies (1-1) are looking to reestablish their home court dominance in their season home opener.

The Jazz lost two games this past weekend when in fact, they could have won them both, and in the case of New Orleans, they should have won.  What doomed the Jazz were excessive turnovers, which just happens to be a strength on this Memphis team.  The Jazz committed 31 turnovers in two games and in just two games, the Grizzlies have forced opponents into 41 giveaways.

The Jazz strength, its size, is going to be challenged tonight when it faces Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and Marc Gasol who are combining for 57 PPG and 29 RPG.  Utah will need to exercise its strength tonight to get a win.  Coming off a day of rest and having to mull the previous two games over will no doubt fuel a fire in the team and help energize them to return to .500 this season.

Prediction:

Jazz win in Memphis

Los Angeles Lakers at Utah Jazz

How they match up:

What can you say about the Lakers?  They are the arch-nemesis to all things Utah Jazz.  And then of all the things they could do, they convince Steve Nash to sign up for one last run to the Finals and then pick up Dwight Howard in the process and go from really hated to super hated.  Yeah, I hate the Lakers that much.

But for all the hatred, there is still a game to look at.  The Lakers started 0-3, which no one saw coming and then had a breakout game where it all went right on Sunday.  However, Steve Nash is still out indefinitely with a leg injury and despite all the talent, the Lakers are still learning how to play with each other.  On opening night, they couldn’t stop anyone, and that was against the Novitzki-less Mavs.  The Clippers had a field day as well.  The team will be good, but they need time to learn to play together.

If there is a time for the Jazz to get one this year against the Lakers, it will be in their lone visit to SLC this season.  And in the ultra-competitive West, wins against a top three favorite will be huge at the end of the season.

The Jazz have always been out-sized by the Lakers but the talent and size along the front court this season should finally match up well with the Lakers.  Kobe is still Kobe, but he’s getting old and I like Randy Foye and Gordon Hayward matched up against him.  And point guard to point guard, Mo Williams outclasses anyone not named Steve Nash.

It will be a typically epic battle between these two teams when they’ve clashed in SLC in the past.  If the Jazz can stay focused and stay determined, I like them in the early season upset over the Lakers.

Prediction:

Jazz win at home

Utah Jazz at Denver Nuggets

Date: Friday, November 9
Location: Pepsi Center
TV:
ESPN, 8;30 PM Utah Time

Stats Comparison:

Jazz Nuggets
Stats NBA Ranking Stats NBA Ranking
99.7 PPG 11th 93.3 PPG 23rd

20 APG 20th 18 APG 26th
97.3 PAPG 15th 101.7 PAPG 25th
*PPG – Points per game     RPG – Rebounds                 APG – Assists                       PAPG – Points Allowed

How they match up:

This Denver team is expected to round out the top four in the West this year, but I’m still skeptical.  How are they any better than a year ago with the clown JaVale McGee and Andre Igoudala, who while a great defender, is not a great scorer?  And the early season returns show that even defensively, they aren’t great yet.  23rd in scoring and 25th in points allowed creates concern for me.

But they too have great size in the low post and the rebounding numbers show it with nearly 48 boards cleared per contest.  They don’t share the ball which will likely come back to haunt them as the season progresses.

However, the Nuggets hold a mental edge over these Jazz of ours and at home, they are just as tough as any team in the league.  I think it will be a battle for 48 minutes but the Nuggets should get a win at home.

Prediction:

Jazz lose in Denver

Phoenix Suns at Utah Jazz

Date: Saturday, November 10
Location: Energy Solutions Arena
TV: Root Sports, 7 PM Utah Time

Stats Comparison:

Jazz Suns
Stats NBA Ranking Stats NBA Ranking
99.7 PPG 11th 90.3 PPG 25th

97.3 PAPG 15th 97 PAPG 13th
*PPG – Points per game     RPG – Rebounds                 APG – Assists                       PAPG – Points Allowed

How they match up:

This Suns team is a whole new beast the Jazz haven’t seen before.  Gone from last season are almost all the key components that chased the Jazz down and nearly beat them for the final playoff spot and the right to be swept in the first round by the Spurs.  But they still have Robin Lopez and Marcin Gortat who give the Jazz fits in match up nightmares.

But the Jazz will be coming home after a tough road loss to the Nuggets the night before and staring down the barrel of a four-game Eastern roadie kicking off in Toronto on Monday so they will be focused and want to get a win to send themselves out into the eastern conference with the right mind set.

The Suns will keep it close early on, but the Jazz will push and push and gain control of this game in the third quarter where they will break it open and skate to an easy finish at the end.

Prediction:

Jazz win at home
